AEO + GEO: Winning Visibility in the Age of AI Search

The BlackBx perspective on Answer Engine and Generative Engine Optimisation

Search is changing. For more than two decades, brands have competed for rankings, clicks and positions on a search engine results page. Thar model isn’t disappearing but it is being fundamentally disrupted.

Consumers are increasingly using AI-powered platforms to research products, compare businesses, evaluate options and make decisions. Instead of being presented with ten blue links, they can receive a researched, summarised and increasingly personalised answer. The commercial challenge is therefore no longer simply: “How do we rank?” It is: “How do we become part of the answer and ultimately, the recommendation?”

This is where Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) come together.

At BlackBx, we don’t see either as a standalone marketing channel. We see them as the next evolution of digital discoverability.

So, AEO, AEO, GEO: What’s the difference? The terms are frequently used interchangeably but there is a useful distinction.

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation

Can we be found? Optimising digital assets to increase visibility within traditional search engine results.

AEO – Answer Engine Optimisation

Can we provide the answer? Structuring information so search and AI-powered systems can easily understand, retrieve and surface it when responding to a question.

GEO – Generative Engine Optimisation

Will AI include, cite or recommend us? Increasing the probability that a brand, product, service or expertise is represented within generative AI responses.

Put simply:

SEO gets you ranked.

AEO helps you become the answer.

GEO helps you become part of the recommendation.

And increasingly, businesses need all three.

The BlackBx lens: from search visibility to AI visibility

The mistake would be to treat GEO as the latest version of SEO. It is bigger than that. Generative engines don’t understand a business purely through its website. They operate within a much wider information ecosystem. They encounter your brand through your website, publishers, news coverage, reviews, comparison sites, directories, affiliate content, expert commentary, community conversations and numerous other sources. Every one of these creates signals that help machines understand:

Who you are. What you do. What you’re good at. Who you’re relevant to. Whether other sources agree. Ultimately:Whether you deserve to be included in an answer. This means AI visibility is not simply an owned content problem. It is an ecosystem problem.

From backlinks to citations

This is where GEO becomes particularly interesting. SEO taught businesses to think about backlinks. GEO requires businesses to think about citations, mentions and corroboration.

We want to know: Who is talking about the brand? Where are they talking about it? What are they saying? Which sources are repeatedly appearing in AI answers? Which sources appear to influence recommendations within our category? Where are competitors being cited and we aren’t?

That creates an entirely new layer of opportunity, the objective isn’t simply to generate another backlink. It is to build a sufficiently strong digital evidence network around the brand.

The BlackBx AEO + GEO Radar

This is where we believe BlackBx can bring something different. We don’t start with content production. We start with intelligence. The BlackBx AEO + GEO Radar scans the digital landscape surrounding the business. We identify the commercially important questions customers are asking and test how the brand appears across AI-powered discovery environments. We then map:

PROMPTS – ANSWERS – BRANDS – CITATIONS – SOURCES – GAPS – OPPORTUNITIES

For every commercially important theme, we want to understand:

Are we present? Who appears instead? What is AI saying about them? What evidence supports the answer? Which domains are being cited? Why might those sources be trusted? Can we legitimately earn visibility within those sources? What information are we failing to provide ourselves?

This moves GEO away from theory and into something commercially actionable.

GEO changes the value of digital PR

Historically, PR coverage has typically been measured through reach, readership, brand exposure and links. Generative discovery adds another potential source of value: AI influence.

An article published today may continue contributing to how machines understand a brand long after the initial campaign has finished. That means publisher selection becomes more strategic. Instead of simply asking: “How many people will see this?” we should also be asking: “Does this source appear within the information environment influencing AI answers in our category?” That could materially change how brands approach digital PR.

GEO changes affiliate marketing too

The same applies to affiliates. Editorial publishers, buying guides, comparison sites and specialist content platforms contain exactly the type of information consumers ask AI systems to synthesise. Consider:

“What are the best premium car detailing services in the UK?”

“Where should I buy tickets for London attractions?”

“What are the best experience gifts for couples?”

“Which independent Porsche specialists have the best reputation?”

The AI answer may draw upon multiple independent sources before forming its response. Affiliate publishers can therefore potentially perform two jobs: Drive transactions today and Strengthen digital authority tomorrow. For BlackBx, that creates an opportunity to connect GEO, affiliates, digital PR and commercial partnerships rather than managing them as isolated channels.

Reddit, Quora and the conversation layer

GEO also forces businesses to pay greater attention to the conversations happening outside their controlled digital estate. Customers don’t always want a brand’s answer. They often want another customer’s answer. Questions such as:

“Is it actually worth it?”

“Has anyone used them?”

“Which would you choose?”

“What’s the catch?”

are naturally answered within communities and forums. Platforms such as Reddit and Quora therefore form part of the wider discovery ecosystem but this shouldn’t translate into brands manufacturing conversations or planting recommendations.

The opportunity is much smarter. Listen to the conversation. Understand the questions. Identify misconceptions. Find information gaps. Create genuinely useful answers. Build better content. Encourage authentic advocacy. AEO and GEO should improve the quality of the information ecosystem surrounding the brand not pollute it.

From share of search to Share of Answer

One of the metrics we believe will become increasingly important is:

SHARE OF ANSWER – If a customer asks AI ten commercially important questions within your category:

How many times do you appear? And more importantly: How often are you recommended? That gives businesses a new competitive benchmark. That begins to create a measurable AI visibility framework.

I’d close it by pulling the whole argument back to the BlackBx proposition: intelligence first, commercial opportunity second, execution third.

The BlackBx view

Search visibility was about being found. AI visibility is about being understood, trusted and recommended.

That is the shift. The brands that win in generative discovery will not simply be those producing the most content or chasing the latest optimisation tactic. They will be the businesses that build the strongest, most consistent and most credible digital evidence around who they are, what they do and why they deserve to be recommended.

For BlackBx, that means looking beyond the website and beyond traditional channel boundaries. We connect search, content, digital PR, affiliates, partnerships, reviews, communities, data and AI discovery to understand the complete information ecosystem surrounding a brand.

Our starting point is always intelligence. The BlackBx AEO + GEO Radar turns those questions into a measurable roadmap: identifying the gaps, sources, relationships and actions most likely to strengthen visibility and ultimately increase Share of Answer.

Because the objective isn’t simply to appear in AI.

It is to be the answer.

We see what others miss.
